A Big Day Out – London, The Hammers, The Boleyn!

It’s nice to get away from work sometimes. Recently I took my two sons to London, to watch West Ham play. My Dad, their Grandad, was a bit of a Hammers legend in his time and it was the first time my youngest, Nick, had been to The Boleyn Ground.

Nick’s home for a few months from travelling the world and we had to make this trip now, as West Ham will be moving into the Olympic Stadium next season. It was a long, but enjoyable day. We drove to Basingstoke, where we caught the train to Waterloo. A quick walk and lunch in central London, then the tube out to Upton Park.

As always it was very busy and a full house when we got there. The Hammers duly won the match, an FA Cup tie against Wolves 1-0. Then on the advice of a passenger on the tube in, we walked passed Upton Park station, where thousands were queueing to get away, and onto Forest Gate.

There we got on a much quieter tube and were soon back at Waterloo and on our way home. We all admitted that the pre match singing of “I’m forever blowing bubbles” was quite emotional, as we were thinking of my Dad, there Grandad. They were all good thoughts though of a great man.
